Working Towards a Better Dumbarton

The Worry of Woolworths

November 23, 2008 · 2 Comments

If any proof were needed of the depth of the current crisis in the economy, it is the plight of one of the county’s (and Dumbarton’s) longest established retailers. WE have to assume that Woolies were one of the names on the recent list drawn up by Traynor Begbie on the hundreds of firms with more than a 70% chance of insolvency before the end of January 2009.

Woolworths is a member of Business for Dumbarton and we wish them well in all attempts to find a way of saving the company. The shop is one of the best remaining in our town centre and we don’t want to lose them or the many jobs and customers they bring to the town.

The Guardian report on Woolies current situation is here

My wee boy is devastated ,as i am also ,at the news of the closure of woolworths. As long as i can remember there’s always been a woolies store. The favourite place to go on a Saturday with your pocket money. My parents met in a woolies store in Lancashire where my mother lived & worked in her local store where my father purchased his boot polish from her & they both fell in love. We can’t allow this closure to happen, surely something can be done to save our Woolies Stores. There’s too much history past and much more ahead to be made with our kids visiting their favourite store

Margaret, thank you for your comment which echoes the sentiments of many I’m sure. Unfortunately there isn’t a lot that “we” can do as Woolies fate will be decided at a national level. However I do know that the company consistently said that the Dumbarton branch was one of its best performing stores. We must hope that would be how any buyer would view the situation.
